Out of Rock

At the beginning there was rock..

A spatially very restrained backyard, with a rock ledge originally reaching up to half a meter away from the kitchen and high surrounding walls defined the brief: alleviate the sense of claustrophobia.

The rock was pushed back to allow for a water body to cover virtually the whole area. It added transparency and depth to this small and enclosed space. At night the spillway and the source are lit. The excavated rock was used as a base for the pool and for the retaining walls. By exposing the origin of the garden it is as much of the site as it could possibly be.
